Best US Islands for Honeymooners ~ US Territories

1. San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico, is one of the best places to honeymoon in the United States. It’s perfect for history lovers, with a unique combination of tropical Caribbean weather and Spanish flair.

I love the romantic charm of historic Old San Juan! As newlyweds, walk hand in hand down the blue-cobbled streets and admire the vibrantly colored buildings. One of my favorite things to do in San Juan is walking along the El Paseo del Morro Recreational Trail. You and your partner will love the views of the harbor to one side. Bonus: the ancient city walls (complete with sentry boxes) are on the other.

Some of the top attractions in Old San Juan include the imposing forts of El Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal. There are plenty of Spanish-style plazas and fountains to relax and enjoy the views. Don’t miss the stunning Raices Fountain.  Puerto Rico is the rum capital of the world. So, you can toast each other with a refreshing piña colada in the place it was created.

To get there, fly into the Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport. From there, it’s about a 30-minute drive to Old San Juan. It’s a city on one of the best US territories to honeymoon, so it’s a popular spot.

Stay at the Hotel El Convento, a 4-star hotel in a former convent, or the CasaBlanca Hotel. We loved the rooftop terrace with stone soaking tubs overlooking the city.  Thankfully, prices in San Juan are reasonable. Therefore, $300-$400 a day should cover your hotel, meals, and fun activities, like food tours. ~ Lisa Garrett, Waves and Cobblestones

2. Guam

For couples looking for tropical escapes to celebrate a new chapter of life, a beautiful honeymoon destination is Guam. The island is one of the best US territories to honeymoon and promises visitors gorgeous coastal views, verdant tropical landscapes, and of course, warm weather.

Year-round, the island experiences an average high temperature of 88°F and an average low temperature of 78°F. The weather makes it one of the best islands for honeymooners in the US. On top of this, Guam has plenty of fun things to do that cater to those looking to relax, for a thrilling adventure, or to learn about the island’s history.

For example, couples can spend time relaxing on the stunning beaches. Or, if you’re up for an adventure, you can hike through the lush island interior. The Chamorro Cultural Village is also great for better understanding Guam’s traditional culture and lifestyle. Those interested in visiting this beautiful island can fly into the Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport. And for a place to stay, consider Hotel Nikko Guam. It’s a 5-star hotel that’s centrally located near Tumon Bay.

Depending on where you’re flying in from and your lodgings, you can expect to spend upwards of $5,000 USD on a week-long vacation in Guam. So, if you’re ready for a vacation that offers it all, consider honeymooning in Guam. ~ Kristin, Global Travel Escapades

3. Culebra Island, Puerto Rico

Culebra Island is an idyllic honeymoon destination in the USA with year-round warm weather if you crave a romantic paradise. This hidden gem is a US Island nestled in the Caribbean, and visiting is one of the best things to do in Puerto Rico. It offers a perfect blend of seclusion and enchantment that’s perfect for couples needing a magical escape.

Culebra’s pristine beaches and crystalline waters have a tranquil ambiance. The atmosphere helps create an intimate space for honeymooners. One of its highlights is the famous Flamenco Beach, consistently ranked among the world’s best beaches.

There aren’t large resorts or hotels on Culebra Island, but only a handful of small hotels and private rentals. If you’re looking for a place outside the city, Club Seabourne Hotel is fabulous. It is two miles from the town center and four miles from Flamenco Beach. There’s also an outdoor pool and hammock, great for relaxing. The hotel also offers water sports rentals and massage services, perfect activities for honeymooners.

If you’re an outdoor enthusiast and want to experience water sports on the island, budget the cost of these activities. Considering the costs of accommodations, transportation to and getting around the island, along with extra activities and food, the average 7-day trip cost for a couple to Culebra is approximately $3,500.

To get there, fly to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and take a ferry or a small plane to Culebra. The journey becomes an adventure as you transition from vibrant city life in San Juan to the serenity of Culebra Island.

Whether you and your partner are beach enthusiasts, adventure seekers, or simply want to bask in each other’s company, Culebra promises an unforgettable honeymoon in an intimate island setting. ~ Candice, CS Ginger

Culebra Island isn’t as well known as other most beautiful islands for a honeymoon, but newlyweds will love it.

4. St Croix

Situated in the US Virgin Islands, St Croix is a hidden gem honeymoon destination that feels foreign without needing a passport. It’s the perfect spot for newlyweds who are looking for a blend of tropical nature and history.

This gorgeous island is sunkissed all year, with mild winters and warm summers. You’ll be spoiled with sparkling blue Caribbean water no matter what time you visit. Not to mention its stunning beaches, beautiful greenery, and rich cultural heritage.

As you explore the small island, you’ll discover its diversity, with lush jungles on one side and striking desert landscapes on the other. You’ll also be charmed by the colorful colonial towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted.

Christiansted features a beautiful oceanside boardwalk, a historic fort, and a tiny cay (island), just a two-minute boat ride from downtown. Fredricksted also has a fort, beautiful ocean views, and some of the best snorkeling on the island.

You can easily reach St Croix via direct flights from several major airports. Upon arrival, renting a car is recommended so you can fully explore the island. Two of the best places to stay include The Buccaneer, St Croix’s premier resort, and Hotel on the Cay, located on a tiny island right off of Christiansted. ~ Annie Blay, Your Friend the Nomad

5. Puerto Rican Rainforest

When you think of Puerto Rico, shimmering beaches come to mind. But venture inland, and you’ll discover an entirely different world – the lush, ethereal, and utterly romantic heart of El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System.

Located in Puerto Rico’s eastern folds, El Yunque is an oasis for couples with a penchant for nature and adventure. The symphony of coquí frogs, the whisper of trees, and dance of waterfalls craft an ambiance nothing short of magical.

Every trail leads to new discoveries, whether the breathtaking El Salto Falls or panoramic vistas from Yokahú Tower. If you crave an active honeymoon, you won’t be disappointed. Hiking and waterfall rappelling are just two of the many activities.

For the couple dreaming of waking up in the misty rainforest, Casa Cubuy Ecolodge is a must-stay. Hidden amidst the forest’s embrace, it offers rustic charm with direct access to trails and cascades. Another intimate choice is Wald Haus by DW, a secluded villa that promises romance and serenity.

Though tucked away, El Yunque is just an hour’s drive from San Juan and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. Renting a car is the best way to navigate the winding roads. You’ll have many trails to hike. However, take advantage of the opportunity to reach the close beaches of Luquillo or Fajardo. Make time on your honeymoon to relax on the sand and enjoy Puerto Rican crystal clear waters.

And remember, El Yunque isn’t just a place; it’s an experience. An invitation to reconnect with nature, love, and each other in the heart of Puerto Rico. It’s the perfect match for an adventurous honeymoon on one of the best US islands for honeymooners. ~ Odo, Caribe Vibes

6. St. Thomas

St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands is the perfect honeymoon destination for couples who love a white sand beach and bright blue water. It’s also ideal for newlyweds who want to enjoy watersports and explore the more off-the-beaten-path places. One example is Mermaid’s Chair, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea.

The airport in St. Thomas is less than a 30-minute drive from most spots on the island, making getting around easy.  The area is also the central travel hub to the Virgin Islands.

Not an all-inclusive focused island, St. Thomas is a place that encourages exploration. One great way to wander is to beach hop.  Our favorites are Sapphire Beach, Secret Harbour, Coki Beach, Magens Bay, Brewer’s Bay, and the hard to get to, but very secluded Neltjeberg Beach.

Secret Harbour Beach Resort or Sapphire Bay Beach Resort are ideal places to stay in St. Thomas. Each accommodation offers a peaceful atmosphere, snorkeling off the beach, proximity to restaurants, shopping, and the ferry. Don’t miss taking the ferry to explore the beaches and hiking on St. John in the Virgin Islands National Park.

If you’re looking for fun dining experiences, St. Thomas has that too. Combine a boat or snorkeling trip with dinner at Pizza Pi, the floating pizza boat. For dinner with an incredible view, the Mafolie Hotel serves up some delicious Caribbean food with mountain-top views of Charlotte Amalie and the harbor below.

Best US Islands for Honeymooners ~ Florida

7. Marco Island, Florida

If you’re looking for a relaxing, romantic beach honeymoon without leaving the US, the beautiful islands of southwest Florida are your answer, with as many places as there are shells on the beaches. But one place offers something totally unique — Marco Island.

Located at the gateway of the Florida Everglades, Marco Island offers the same soft white sand beaches with a good dose of adventure at every turn. Plus, Marco Island is secluded from mainland USA. Yet it’s close enough to Naples (just 20 minutes away) for even more high-end shopping and dining.

Regarding amenities and things to do, Marco Island offers laid-back luxury. Accommodations range from moderately priced hotels like the Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort to luxury beachfront resorts like the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort. They can be pricey during the winter tourist season (December-March). However, prices lessen along with the crowds in late spring and summer. So, a lot of the cost depends on your wedding date.

Newlyweds can spend their days lounging by the pool, kayaking through mangroves, or exploring the Ten Thousand Islands. Chances are excellent you’ll find a deserted island overflowing with seashells.

At night, many good restaurants offer everything from fresh, local seafood to veggie options. Dine as you take in a sunset view over the Gulf of Mexico. Sale e Pepe and Fin Bistro are two delicious choices for special occasions. The food alone makes it one of the best US islands for honeymooners.

Getting to Marco Island is also easy, with flights into Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers just 45 minutes away. ~ Lori Sorrentino, Naples Florida Travel Guide

8. Siesta Key, Florida

If you love beaches, the ocean air, and a small village feel, consider Siesta Key as a destination. Coined America’s number one beach, the vast sandy shore offers ample space for couples to relax. Plus, with chair and umbrella rentals, there is no need to cart the beach gear around. It’s definitely one of the best places for a Florida island honeymoon.

Siesta Beach is unique as it has no built-up boardwalk or hotel chains lining it. Instead, visitors dine and party into the wee hours at Siesta Key Village and wake up in poolside rentals like this suite. Or, there are some boutique hotels; check out The Inn for more. Since the accommodation is sought-after, rooms and rentals can be slightly pricey. They start at $350 in summer, but cheaper hotels for honeymooners are located away from the beach.

Activities include taking a leisurely morning stroll together at Crescent Beach, kayaking among the mangroves of Jim Neville Marine Preserve, and gorging on seafood while listening to live music at one of the local bars.

You might also want to take a day trip to Sarasota to see a show and visit the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. Conversely, head to Anna Maria Island for some beach hopping, insane sunsets, and dinner and drinks at Historic Bridge Street and Pier.

The closest airport is 10 miles from the beach, Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. It is advised to rent a car to allow for flexibility. ~ Amanda, Hey! East Coast USA

Best Places for a Florida Island Honeymoon

What is the best island for honeymoon relaxation? Siesta Key in Florida fits the bill nicely.

9. Honeymoon Island, Florida

Honeymoon Island is one of the best US island honeymoons, with warm weather all year long. After all, this island is one of the most beautiful islands in Florida. It boasts 4 miles of pristine white sand beaches and three miles of hiking trails through the few slash pine forests left in the state. So, be sure to sunbathe and swim at Main Beach before taking your favorite pooch to Dog Beach.

Additionally, North Beach is a rocky coastal area where driftwood washes ashore. Honeymooning couples can explore local mangroves before going shelling. This is also an ideal spot to take romantic photos to remember your honeymoon trip.

Now, because Honeymoon Island is a barrier island that sits across from Palm Harbor in Saint Joseph’s Sound, you could fly into St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport and drive 20 minutes to the island. Alternatively, you could fly into Tampa International Airport and go 45 minutes to the island.

Once there, you’ll pay $8.00 per vehicle to enter and can only visit between 8:00 a.m. and sunset. However, it’s worth it since you can surf at North Beach near Bathhouse 3. Just check the swell report since the waves can be hit or miss. Afterward, go swimming and snorkeling around local pilings before hiking on the 2.5-mile Osprey Trail.

Finally, because Honeymoon Island has no accommodations, you’ll want to spend the night at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay. It’s a lovely 4-star hotel with two tennis courts, two pools, and upscale rooms with bay views. I find it hard to argue that it’s one of the best places for a Florida island honeymoon. With a name like Honeymoon Island, it’s absolutely perfect. ~ Victoria, Florida Trippers (photo below)

Best US Islands for Honeymooners ~ Hawaii

10. Kauai, Hawaii

Nicknamed “the Garden Isle” for its weather and natural beauty, Kauai is one of the most beautiful islands for honeymooning.

One of the best things to do in Kauai is to view the majestic Napali Coast. With towering cliffs, hidden valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and caves – it’s an experience you’ll never forget. The Napali Coast can be accessed by helicopter or hiking. For an up close and personal experience, go via boat tour.

Hiking the Waimea Canyon is another awe-inspiring activity. With deep orange-hued cliffs and ridges, Waimea Canyon reaches depths of 3,000 feet. It’s often called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.

Poipu Beach is considered one of the best beaches in Kauai. Consequently, it lives up to its reputation with golden sand and clear waters. The beach is just one of many reasons Kauai is one of the best US islands for honeymooners.

Our favorite Kauai restaurants are Sam’s Ocean View Restaurant and Bar and Bar Acuda. Both have great food, but it’s tough to beat the ocean view at Sam’s. For food trucks, find Carlito’s Way for the best Mexican food and Da Fazenda for Brazillian. Small Town Coffee has the best cup of coffee and scrumptious breakfast bites.

To get to Kauai, fly into Lihue Airport, rent a car, and explore the island at your own pace. Stay at the Ko’a Kea Resort in Poipu for luxurious accommodations and beautiful ocean views. Hanalei Bay Resort in Princeville is also an excellent choice for couples seeking privacy and romance.

The cost of your Kauai honeymoon depends on the length of stay, activities, and accommodations. While Kauai is generally more expensive than other destinations, there are multiple ways to save on your honeymoon, such as traveling during the shoulder season. ~ Trysta L, This Travel Dream

Kauai Island Hawaii What Is the Best Island for Honeymoon

Dubbed one of the best islands for honeymooning, Kauai has lovely beaches, clear water, and a gorgeous landscape.

11. Oahu, Hawaii

As part of the Hawaiian archipelago, Oahu provides a romantic escape for a honeymoon. I honeymooned on the islands by taking a Hawaiian cruise from Vancouver and spent five days in Oahu afterward. By taking a cruise, we only needed a one-way flight out of Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL).

While Honolulu is the preferred area for a stay, escape the crowds at the north coast. We stayed in Honolulu at the Coconut Waikiki Hotel because it was budget-friendly and had spacious suites.

We could walk to restaurants such as Tommy Bahamas, Hard Rock Café, and a fabulous Thai restaurant called Siam Square. At night, Honolulu’s streets are torch-lit, creating a romantic ambiance. It has numerous patio bars and restaurants, perfect for watching sunsets.

With idyllic year-round temperatures, Oahu attracts couples for its outdoor activities. We spent our days snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, climbing the Diamond Head crater, touring Pearl Harbor, and exploring the island. Renting a car gave us freedom to drive the coast and find secluded beaches.

One of our favorite activities was touring Kualoa Ranch. Our all-day adventure included seeing film locations of Jurassic Park, Kong Skull Island, and 50 First Dates.

While admission fees can be pricey on Oahu, we saved money by pre-purchasing the Go City Oahu Card, which includes admission to popular venues. We purchased a four-day pass, which gave us one premium option, which we used for the Polynesian Cultural Center (with Luau and show). ~ Karen, Forever Karen

12. Big Island of Hawaii

Ah, the Big Island of Hawaii. If you’re the kind of couple who loves a mix of adventure and relaxation, this is your paradise. The island is a playground for outdoorsy folks. Think hiking up Mauna Kea to stargaze or snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of Honaunau Bay. The natural beauty here is truly overwhelming, and the remote nature of the island makes it feel extraordinary for your honeymoon.

Now, let’s talk money. Hawaii isn’t cheap, but you can find various options to suit your budget. Expect to spend at least $200 USD a night in a decent hotel. Speaking of which, check out the Kona Village Resort for boutique accommodation on Hawaii’s Big Island. It has an authentic Polynesian vibe with modern luxuries.

Another gem is Holualoa Inn, perched on the Mauna Loa slopes with panoramic ocean views and a short drive from the island’s capital, Hilo. This is a winner for honeymooners who want decent access to Volcanoes National Park.

Getting here is a breeze. The Kona International Airport is your gateway to the Big Island, with direct flights from several mainland cities. I recommend renting a car at the airport since it’s the best way to explore the island’s sprawling beauty. The Big Island is definitely one of the best islands in Hawaii for a honeymoon trip.~ Haley, Haley Blackall Travel

Big Island Hawaii Honeymoon

Of course, Hawaii’s main island is one of the best US islands for honeymooners and a romantic vacation.

13. Lanai, Hawaii

Lanai in Hawaii is perfect for a more remote and intimate island honeymoon. Situated just off the coast of Maui, Lanai offers a tranquil escape from the crowds of other nearby Hawaiian islands, with an exclusive, private-island feel.

Despite being the smallest of the inhabited Hawaiian islands, Lanai still boasts plenty of things to do for adventurous couples and opportunities to relax and indulge in luxury. Lanai is also home to some of the best beaches in Hawaii and beautiful, unspoiled nature.

One of the highlights of a visit to Lanai is the Garden of the Gods. This unique, otherworldly landscape with its orange and red rocks feels like you’ve been transported to Mars.

There is only one small town on the island, Lanai City, with limited restaurants and shops. However, what it lacks in amenities, it makes up for in charm and history, having been founded in the early 1900s when Lanai was responsible for 75% of the world’s pineapple production.

As you may expect with a destination that prides itself on exclusivity, the price of a honeymoon here reflects the luxury provided. For those that prefer five-star luxury, there are two exceptionally-rated Four Seasons hotels with prices per night typically exceeding $1500.

It is possible to get here via plane from Oahu or Maui or by ferry from Maui. ~ Sophie, We Dream of Travel

US Island Honeymoon Lanai Hawaii

Lanai may not be the first US honeymoon island that comes to mind, but it’s peaceful and idyllic for a romantic getaway.

14. Maui, Hawaii

The palm-fringed beaches of Maui form the perfect backdrop for a beach-side honeymoon. Wailea, a luxurious resort community in South Maui, is renowned for its romantic vibe.

Hotel Wailea, part of the exclusive Relais & Château hotel collection, is the only adults-only boutique hotel on the island and a haven of tranquility. This intimate accommodation is also home to the most romantic private dining experience called The Treehouse. Opt for a delightful pampering session in one of Wailea’s spas or take a relaxing stroll along the Wailea Beach Path to discover the area’s postcard beaches.

End your day with a sunset sailing cruise, a luau performance, or a sunset experience on top of the Haleakala volcano. Another romantic Maui resort is located on the opposite side of the island. Follow the Road to Hana that meanders between the coast and a lush landscape of waterfalls and tropical flowers. The Hana-Maui is a boutique hotel tucked away in the remote town of Hana, overlooking the scenic eastern coast of the island. It’s the perfect place to stay for honeymooners who like to spice up their trip with some adventure.

Kahului Airport is located on the northern coast of the Valley Isle. It offers direct flights to and from the mainland. Because the roads circle around the volcano, renting a car is strongly recommended to make the most of your Maui trip. ~ Sarah, Places to Stay Maui

Other Best US Islands for Honeymooners

15. Catalina Island, California

trip to Catalina Island is perfect for a honeymoon getaway, with its warm weather year-round. This lesser-known gem, just off the Southern California coast, offers an intimate escape for couples seeking an idyllic destination. Catalina’s pristine beaches, breathtaking sunsets, and serene atmosphere create a perfect romantic setting. Stroll hand in hand along Descanso Beach, savor private picnics, or enjoy a glass of wine under the stars.

Catalina caters to various tastes and budgets. Accommodations range from mid to high-end, with options for all. It’s ideal for couples, be it urban dwellers, outdoor enthusiasts, or foodies. I recommend the Aurora Hotel, a boutique hotel with ocean views, for a cozy, intimate stay. Alternatively, Mt. Ada offers luxurious elegance and personalized service.

You can reach Catalina Island by ferry from several Southern California cities like Long Beach, San Pedro, and Dana Point. Alternatively, you can take a helicopter from Long Beach for a faster journey. There’s no airport on the island, but these transportation options make it easily accessible.

Explore the walkable downtown of Avalon and visit Catalina Casino. Rent a golf cart and reach some vista points for epic views of the island. Diving, snorkeling, and water activities like kayaking are popular here. There are several beaches on the island to soak in the sun. There are plenty of dining options in downtown Avalon, like Bluewater Avalon, to savor delicious seafood. ~ Anu Agarwal, Destination Checkoff
