Consider the Most Romantic Places in Europe for Honeymoons
Many people enjoy heading to the Caribbean for a week of fun in the sun, but if I had to choose based on my personality, I would totally head to a European city to live like a local for a week. How amazing it would be to immerse myself in the shops, food, culture, and history of a city or locale.
I love to travel, and I thought I would share a few of the places I’ve visited that would be perfect for a Europe honeymoon trip. I have been to each of these locations, and I hope you enjoy my personal picks of European honeymoon destinations. Some rank as the most romantic places in Europe for honeymooning, so let’s go!
Best Honeymoon Destinations in Europe
Amsterdam, Netherlands
This city has so much to offer in the way of beauty! I love how the canals are woven throughout the area, and the tall, thin homes that line the waterways are so beautiful.
Attractions like the Anne Frank House and the VanGogh Museum are stops you must make along with walking through the flower market. Tulips and other blooms are prominent in the markets and are an earmark of the Netherlands.
Also, be sure to ride a bike, take a canal boat ride, and test out some local cheese while you are there. Amsterdam really can be perfect for those who are considering urban honeymoon destinations.
Munich, Germany
Need a bit of exercise? Climb up all 306 steps (it doesn’t sound like a lot, but it IS!) to the top of Peterskirche to see a stunning view of the city. The Marienplatz area has a Glockenspiel, which is a type of clock in the square where the wooden figures perform a dance.
I have been to Munich twice. The history of the city made an impression on me. It’s also fun to peruse the shops and take in some authentic German fare (which isn’t my favorite, to be honest). It would definitely be an interesting location for a Europe honeymoon.
Ephesus, Turkey
Ok, technically Turkey is in Asia and Europe. I saw it in conjunction with Greece, so to me it blends a little bit. Of all of the places I have been to look at historical ruins, the ones at Ephesus were the most impactful.
It is well preserved, and so much of the history is still visible. From homes to bathhouses, city centers, and more, the evidence of ancient happenings in Ephesus is interesting! There is a town that is more modern that is near the ruins, but the ancient part is what was most enjoyable in my opinion.
Rhodes, Greece
Greece is one of those honeymoon destinations in Europe that is filled with history and gorgeous views. It’s also on the water, which makes it even more stunning. Lindos Acropolis had one of the most gorgeous views I’ve ever seen with its white buildings and lovely blue water.
The town of Rhodes weaves up towards the ruins, and there are locally-owned artisan shops along the way. Taking in the seaside city views make Rhodes one of the most romantic place in Europe for honeymooners.
Bodrum, Turkey
This is SUCH a fun place! Local vendors sell freshly caught fish right by the seaside, but one of my favorite things was riding a boat called a gullet. Literally, it was so incredibly fun and romantic.
A few of us took a guided boat out, which made its way (not too fast and not too slow) through the beautiful waters. We had a meal of freshly caught fish and sat and soaked in the sun and beauty from the front of the boat.
Another highlight was swimming in clear waters. It is all a little surreal now that I am thinking back on how wonderful it was. Bodrum is not only beautiful, but it is also filled with a rich history. Bodrum is a bit off the beaten path, but it is certainly one of the best honeymoon destinations in Europe. Gorgeous!
Mykonos, Greece
If you are looking for a honeymoon trip near the water, then Mykonos may suffice. Actually, so many of the Greek Isles are considered some of the best honeymoon destinations in Europe.
One thing that Mykonos is famous for are the windmills, which to me look a bit like men with balding hair – ha! The seaport town is lovely, and the views are gorgeous in this laid back town.
Santorini, Greece
If you have heard about Santorini, you may be familiar with the blue-roofed homes along the shoreline. Let me tell you – they are beautiful. We took some time to rent ATVs and explore the island, which was SUCH a good idea.
Our group stumbled upon fun things like a restaurant with a pool so that we could eat and swim. We also encountered a local winery and various beautiful sights around the island, including a beach with black sand. Santorini will always remain at a high point and is often considered one of the most romantic places in Europe for honeymoon bliss.
Athens, Greece
A trip to Greece isn’t complete without a stop in Athens, and this view from the Parthenon shows just that. As with many other Grecian cities, Athens has museums and a lot of history. It also has the modernity of city life to go along with it in the way of shops, restaurants, and hotels.
Plus it is one of the locations that is truly easy to get to via airplane in Greece. If you want to do a road trip, it makes the perfect starting or ending point for your honeymoon trip.
Lisbon, Portugal
I adore Lisbon! It’s one of my favorite European cities, and it’s close to so many things. The city itself is filled with architecture, history, and amazing food, but venturing out is also worthwhile.
Sintra is beautiful, and there are wineries throughout the Douro Valley. The coastline isn’t far away for beach-goers, too. This is one of my favorite honeymoon destinations, and I can’t wait to get back there someday.
