How to Spend 5 Days in Kauai for Couples

Why Kauai for couples on a romantic getaway?

The island of Kauai is a beautiful, lush tropical getaway with a whole host of things to do. There are several stunning remote locations and beautiful beaches to get a different perspective of the island.

If you are looking for a well-packed five days in Kauai itinerary for couples, you have come to the right place. You also do not need to stick to the plan as written. Of course, you can adjust things to fit your schedule. However, you do not want to miss out on these locations, so add them to your list.

Here are a few additional popular questions many folks ask about visiting Kauai.

  • How many days do you need in Kauai? That all depends on the goals for your romantic trip. Decide how many days you simply want to lay on the beach and balance that with days of exploration. Plan what you want to fit into your time, and work from there. Although a five-day Kauai for couples itinerary is ideal.
  • How do I know what to do in Kauai for 5 days? This post is a great start! After reading it, pick and choose the activities you’d like to do to fill your itinerary. If something piques your interest, you can add an extra day. Or you can skip something and plan a day of relaxation instead.
  • Are there enough things to do in Kauai for couples? Yes! It’s a great place to spend time.
  • What to do in Kauai for a week? Our itinerary is a great start to figuring that out.
  • Is 5 days in Kauai enough? It is, but it also depends on how far you have to travel to get to the Hawaiian islands. If you have a significant time change or long flights, you may want to plan an extra day or two in the beginning. That way, you can relax and get acclimated.

A Kauai for couples trip offers the ultimate in flexibility.

Kauai, also known as the Garden Island, has many things to include on your romantic trip to the island. If you and your partner need to add one or two more days to split activities, I recommend doing so. For example, if you want to hike more in Kauai, add a day or two to avoid feeling rushed.

Just know that this 5-day Kauai itinerary isn’t rigid, but let it serve as a guide for a fabulous time in Hawaii.

5 Day Itinerary for Kauai for Couples

Day 1 – Poipu (Relax Day)

The first thing on your list after a travel day (depending on when you land) is most likely relaxing. Especially if you’re planning a Hawaiian honeymoon, you’ll need downtime after the big day. Plan on scheduling a day to relax, get yourselves acquainted, and adjust to your surroundings.

The town of Poipu, located in the South of Kauai, is the perfect place to relax at one of the many beaches. Poipu is also the best place on the island, where you can snorkel, swim, bodyboard, and fish. Just be sure to pack for a beach honeymoon appropriately and bring your swim gear.

Other activities around Poipu include walking along the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail, a beautiful coastal walk from outside Poipu to Makahuena Light. Shipwreck Beach is part of the Heritage Trail and an excellent beach to hang out and relax.

During certain times of the year, typically after a winter wedding, the waves and water can become rough. Therefore, swimming or any water activities could prove dangerous.

If you are an avid golfer or know someone who loves golfing, there are two golf courses around Poipu. Pack your clubs (just let the airline know beforehand!) and set off on a round or two.

Day 2 – Wailua, Kapa’a, Lihue

Wailua

Wailua is located on the East side of Kauai, one of the main tourist destinations. This side of Kauai is known as the “Coconuts Coast” because once you approach Wailua, you will notice the numerous coconut trees along the coast and throughout the town.

Some attractions in or around Wailua are the Fern Grotto, which is only accessible by boat or kayak. The Fern Grotto is located along the Wailua River and is a cave formed from lava rock covered in ferns. Additionally, two popular waterfall locations in Wailua are Opaeka’a Falls and Wailua Falls.

If you have watched Fanasty Island before, you may recognize Wailua Falls because it was part of the opening scene. The dramatic double waterfall falls from 80 feet (24 meters). The falls create beautiful rainbows during the morning hours. You do not need to hike down to Wailua Falls, as you can see the waterfalls from the road.

Opaeka’a Falls is another tourist waterfall location and one of the best main waterfalls on Kauai. Opeaka’a means “rolling shrimp,” as the pool was once abundant with shrimp.

You and your significant other can hike to the top or around the falls. However, it is tricky and muddy and may take around 30 minutes to complete. As a result, the views from the top make it worthwhile. Or, if you would rather not do a hike, most couples stay near the road and observe the falls from the highway lookout point.

Considering Kauai for honeymoon romance? Don’t miss Wailua Falls, which is a stunning double set of falls.

Kapa’a Food Trucks

There are many food trucks located in Kapa’a. One of the most popular food trucks is The Musubi Truck, offering various musubi creations. Musubi is a snack or lunch originally from Japan and is composed of a slice of grilled Spam (the original way) on top of a block of rice. The Spam and rice are wrapped with a piece of nori (dried seaweed).

Here is a list of other popular food trucks in Kapa’a:

  • Al Pastor Tacos (bright red food truck)
  • 808 Grill
  • Da Melting Pot
  • Happy Snacks

Keep in mind that hours can change at any time for food trucks. Also, some food trucks may be closed on Sundays, Mondays, or Tuesdays.

Optional Pit Stop in Lihue

Lihue is on the way to Wailua and is the primary commercial location on Kauai. There is a shopping center and many historical sites, such as Menehune Fishpond (‘Alekoko Fishpond), the Grove Farm, a preserves sugar-plantation farm offering tours, and the Kauai Museum.

Other places to check out in Lihue are Kalapaki Beach, a crescent-shaped cove perfect for stand-up paddle boarding and other water activities. The spots at Kuki’i Point Lighthouse are stunning. Additionally, Ninini Point Lighthouse has been an operational lighthouse since 1897.

Lihue Hawaii for Honeymooners

One of the things to do in Kauai for couples is to at least make a pit stop in Lihue.

Day 3 – Na Pali Coast

Kauai is worth visiting for many reasons. However, the top attraction that everyone wants to experience is the Na Pali Coast. It is the biggest attraction and significant landmark with its rugged, beautiful peaks and carved valleys that abruptly stop at the coast.

If you and your significant other want to explore the Na Pali Coast, there are three different ways to do so:

  • The first way is exploring from the ground. The challenging Kalalau Trail is a stunning coastal and jungle trail that ends at Kalalau Beach. You will have to get a permit to hike the valley. There are also one-night camping permits for the journey to and back. The 11-mile (17.7 kilometers) hiking trail takes you through narrow paths along the cliffsides, potentially muddy trails through the jungle, scenic viewpoints, and pristine beaches such as Hanakāpī’Ai Beach. If you and your partner choose to do the Kalalau Trail, be prepared. Pack proper hiking attire and gear and leave no trace behind.
  • The second way to explore the Na Pali Coast is from the air. Even if you are scared of heights, I recommend experiencing one of the best doors off helicopter tours on Kauai. It is an exhilarating experience to see the Na Pali Coast from a bird’s eye view. You and your significant other can see the peaks and valleys in a way you cannot see from the ground. Plus, your photos will not be obstructed by glares from the window, so you’ll have the perfect Instagram photos.
  • The last way to explore the coast is by water. Many boat tours will take you to the coast; from there, you can kayak or snorkel. The water can be choppy or rough during certain times of the year, so if you have any motion sickness medication, I would take it.

Going to Kauai for the first time? Be sure to drive to the Na Pali Coast to see the gorgeous formations.

Day 4 – Kilauea, Hanalei, Princeville (North Shore)

The North Shore of Kauai is the most lush and green location on the island because it receives the most rainfall. If you’re planning a Kauai for couples trip, this is an area not to miss. However, the rain should not stop you from exploring the towns of Hanalei, Kilauea, and Princeville.

Hanalei

Hanalei is a small town bordered by a crescent-shaped beach called Hanalei Beach. The calm waters make it an excellent place on the island to snorkel and swim. This town is also unique because it is known for growing taro, as there are many taro fields and farms.

The town also has historic locations, such as the Hanalei Pier, where locals like to gather and hang out. The Black Pot Beach is beside the pier, where many locals fish, kayak, or watch the sunset. Also, make sure you and your partner check out Holey Grail Donuts for a delicious treat. It’s a small food truck on the right as you enter Hanalei.

Kilauea

Another location on the North Shore is the small town of Kilauea. There are many places to check out in the surrounding area, such as Kauapea Beach, Kahili Beach Preserve, and Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, where you can also see the Kīlauea Lighthouse.

There is also the Kauapea Beach Trail Head. It’s a short but steep hike to a romantic secluded beach. Be sure you and your significant other don’t miss the Na’ Aina Kai Botanical Gardens & Sculpture Park, a 240-acre preserve full of bronze statues and stunning gardens.

Princeville

Princeville is a hotel and resort area with little to see and do tourist-wise. However, if you are into golfing, there are two golf courses in Princeville: Makai Golf Course and Princeville at Hanalei.

There are a few small beaches in the area: Puu Poa Beach, Hideaway Beach, and Anini Beach. You can also check out the Princeville Botanical Gardens, a spot to explore rare species of plants and chocolate tastings. Roaming gardens and sampling chocolate can add to the romance of a trip to Kauai for couples.

Day 5 – Waimea Canyon & Hanapepe

Hanapepe

Hanapepe was once Kauai’s largest and busiest community from World War I to about the 1950s. Today, the historic town has become a community with small shops, local restaurants, and art galleries. The famous Hanapepe Swinging Bridge is also where you can walk across as it gently sways from the wind.

Waimea Canyon

Known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” for its red coloration, the Waimea Canyon offers incredible views of the island and even part of the Na Pali Coast. The 550 Highway will take you to many hiking trails and lookout points in Waimea Canyon.

Some hiking trails, such as Awa’awapuhi Trail (3 hours 40 minutes, out and back) and Nu’alolo Trail Vista (4 hours 45 minutes, out and back), are considered moderate to challenging, so keep that in mind. Nevertheless, they both have beautiful viewpoints at the end.

If you are not into hiking, there are vantage points along the way, such as Hohonu Awawa Lookout, Waimea Canyon Lookout, Pu’u Ka Pele Lookout, and near the end of the 550 Highway, Kalalau Lookout and Pu’u O Kila Lookout.

Why is Kauai so popular? Places like Waimea Canyon attract couples and other tourists because of the island’s beauty.

Best Time for Couples to Visit Kauai

The best time to visit Kauai is during the shoulder months. Therefore plan a romantic trip to Kauai in April, May, September, or October. But that being said, the weather in Kauai changes often (microclimates), meaning it can be sunny and pouring rain the next.

How To Get Around Kauai for Couples

The best way for honeymooners to get around Kauai is by car. Not only is it more convenient, but it is also easier for you and your new husband or wife to explore the island on your own time and pace.

If you compare Oahu and Kauai, Oahu has multiple highways to get around the island. Meanwhile, when driving on Kauai, one road (changing highway names at certain points) will get you from one side to another.

3 Tips For Visting Kauai on a Romantic Trip

Here are a few tips for first-time visitors to Kauai.

1. Make reservations.

Whenever visiting Hawaii in general, you will likely have to make reservations for any excursions or tours at least two days in advance. Additionally, making reservations also goes for purchasing tickets for state parks. Don’t face the disappointment of missing out on honeymoon activities by not booking in time.

2. Arrive early for parking.

Most of the time, popular tourist locations tend to get busy quickly, thus also leading to trouble finding parking. I suggest arriving at least 15 minutes early from opening so you can guarantee yourself a spot for parking.

3. Buy reef-safe sunscreen.

The Hawaiian Islands have many coral reefs and shallow waters on beaches. When you do any water activities like snorkeling in the US, it is recommended that you use reef sunscreen to protect the marine wildlife and coral. For example, we like using the brand Blue Lizard. It did not leave a white cast or oily residue.

Fun Facts About Kauai for Couples to Know

Kauai is the oldest (commercial) Hawaiian Island but only the fourth largest. It is also the most lush out of all the islands, hence the nickname the “Garden Island.”

One of the most interesting and coolest facts about Kauai is that there is a law that buildings, resorts, and hotels cannot exceed more than four floors tall. The law is called the “Palm Tree Building Code,” as a structure cannot be taller than a palm tree, which helps maintain the island’s eco-friendliness and zone laws.

Kauai is the perfect island for agriculture because of the weather and rain. Some of the main crops grown on the island are taro, sugar cane, coffee, and coconuts.
