What to Do in Lisbon for Couples

19 Romantic Things to Do in Lisbon

1. Enjoy sunset at Miradouro de Santa Luzia.

The Miradouro de Santa Luzia is the perfect spot to watch the sunset with your partner. This beautiful viewpoint is right in the heart of the Alfama neighborhood, which is brimming with quaint vibes. From this viewpoint, you will get views of the city’s red-tiled roofs, the Tagus River, and the boats coming into the port.

There are also musicians who play here, which adds to the romantic atmosphere. As a result, make sure to get there at least 30 minutes before sunset to get a good spot because it can get crowded.

2. Stroll through the Jardim Botânico da Universidade de Lisboa.

The Jardim Botânico da Universidade de Lisboa is a stunning botanical garden in the Príncipe Real neighborhood of Lisbon. This garden has been around since 1906 when King Carlos issued a Royal Decree that it be built.

It is over 7 hectares (17 acres) and is perfect for a romantic stroll with the one you love. You can walk under tall palm trees, get lost in the greenrooms, and take in all the beauty that this botanical garden has to offer.

Also, admission to the garden is just €3, so it’s not only a lovely place to spend an afternoon but also a budget-friendly option.

3. Visit to Torre de Belém at twilight.

Torre de Belém is one of the top places to go in Lisbon. It is located on the outskirts of Lisbon in the Belém neighborhood. Therefore, it’s just a short bus or train ride from the center. This famous tower is right on the water (or should I say in the water) and has a bridge leading to it.

Surrounding the Tower is a park called the Jardim da Torre de Belém. It’s a place where you can set up a blanket and watch the sun rise or set while taking in the beauty of this medieval watchtower.

4. Go wine tasting in local Portuguese wineries.

From ancient to modern times, wine has been known as a romantic drink. So why not go wine tasting while you are in one of the most ethereal cities in the world? Lisbon has a rich history of wine stretching back to 2000 BC.

Some of the best vineyards that you can find near Lisbon are Adega Regional de Colares in Sintra, AdegaMãe Sociedade Agrícola in Torres Vedras, and Quinta do Gradil in Cadaval.

The best way to get to these wineries is by booking a tour from Lisbon. This also allows you and your partner to not worry about transportation. So, you can indulge and drink all the wine your heart desires.

Some of the best romantic places in Portugal are the vineyards in wine country near Lisbon.

5. Experience Fado night in Alfama.

Fado is the music of Lisbon that has been around since the early 1800s. The music mainly revolves around sad sea tales and the life of the poor. Fado is usually performed by one singer and accompanied by a twelve-string Portuguese Guitarra.

Go for a romantic evening on the town by visiting a Fado night in the Alfama neighborhood. They are usually held at restaurants, so you get dinner and a show. Make sure you book a reservation in advance because the restaurants with Fado performances fill up fast.

6. Go on a private food tour.

If there is one thing that makes Lisbon famous, it’s food. There is so much delicious cuisine in Lisbon. As a result, booking a private food tour can be the perfect way to try a little bit of every cuisine this city offers.

The great thing about private food tours is that you and your partner will get special treatment from the guide. And you won’t have to worry about obnoxious people ruining your romantic night.

These food tours usually include walking around the neighborhoods of Lisbon while trying local dishes and treats. I recommend booking a tour with drinks included so you can try local alcohols like Vinho Verde and Ginja.

7. Watch the sunset on a river cruise.

Is there anything more romantic than a sunset river cruise? You and your love can watch the sunset while sipping wine and taking in the magnificent views of Lisbon. These cruises take place on the Tagus River and let you see Lisbon from a new perspective.

You can either book a river cruise with a group or, if you want an extra romantic evening, you can book a private tour. These cruises take you along the coast to famous places like the Torre de Belém, Ajuda National Palace, and the Ponte 25 de Abril. Also, make sure that you book a tour with wine included so you can see these famous landmarks in style.

8. Picnic in Parque Eduardo VII.

From Parque Eduardo VII, enjoy city views while having a lovely picnic in the park’s grassy field. I recommend grabbing sandwiches at the famous As Bifanas do Afonso, which serves delicious pork chop sandwiches. Then get some Pastéis de Nata, along with a few drinks.

You can walk for 30 minutes or take the subway to Parque Eduardo VII, where you can enjoy food while soaking up the sun in this beautiful haven from the busy city. The park is massive, so finding a secluded spot for a romantic picnic should be easy.

Quick Tip: For an extra unique date-night idea, head over to the Estudia Fria, located in the park, which is a large botanical garden located in the heart of Lisbon.

Parque Eduardo VII

A romantic Portugal itinerary should include a stop at Parque Eduardo VII in Lisbon on your honeymoon.

9. Walk Along the Ribeira das Naus.

The Ribeira das Naus is a manmade river beach that attracts tourists and locals alike. During the summer, you can relax in the sun on the steps leading down to the river, and in the winter months, you can watch the sunset behind the famous Ponte 25 de Abril.

There is also a wide boardwalk that stretches about 300 meters, where you can walk and take in the views of the Tagus River. The Ribeira das Naus is right by the Praça do Comércio. Additionally, there, you can find the main entry point of Lisbon at the Arco da Rua Augusta.

10. Wander Sintra’s fairy-tale castles as one of the top romantic things to do in Lisbon.

The Sintra castles are one of my favorite day trips from Lisbon. These mountain-top castles tower over the surrounding land and give you 360-degree views of the beautiful landscape.

Some of the best castles in this area are the colorful Pena Palace, the medieval Moorish Castle, and the lavish Monserrate Palace.

The best way to see these castles is to book a tour or take a train to Sintra. Then buy hop-on-hop-off bus tickets when you arrive. If you want to learn fascinating history while taking in beautiful architecture, this is the perfect day trip for you and your husband or wife.

11. Attend a Performance at Teatro Nacional de São Carlos.

Teatro Nacional de São Carlos is the main opera house in Lisbon, opened in 1793. Its interior is stunning and feels like something out of a fairytale. Here, you and your partner will experience a romantic night of beautiful singing and maybe even some dancing.

If you have never experienced the opera, this ancient building is the perfect place to do so. Sink into your seats and let the music transport you. This is sure to be a night that you and your love will never forget.

12. Visit Lisbon’s historic cafés and pastelarias.

There is nothing like relaxing with a loved one in a quaint little cafe, sipping coffee while gazing into each other’s eyes. There are many historic cafes around Lisbon, like A Brasileira, Confeitaria Nacional, and Antiga Confeitaria de Belém.

These little cafes are the perfect place to spend time with your partner and relax from an exhausting vacation. There are also many historic Pastelarias around Lisbon that serve delicious pastries and snacks.

Some of the most popular ones are Versailles, Café Pastelaria Benard, and Santo António. Whether you prefer a strong espresso or a flakey pastry, Lisbon has so many places to choose from that will be the perfect date spot for you and your SO.

13. Have cocktails at a Costa da Caparica beach bar.

If you love Cascais, you should also head to Costa da Caparica. This coastal city has over 16 miles (26 kilometers) of Portugal’s most amazing beaches and beach bars. Some of the best beach bars are Princesa, Praia Irmão, Marcelino Beach Club, and my favorite, Pe Nu.

These are the perfect places to relax, escape the hot Portuguese sun, have a romantic dinner, and watch the sunset over the ocean. Additionally, all the beach bars in this area serve excellent fresh seafood and cocktails that are to die for.

14. Experience a day trip to Cascais.

Cascais is just an hour’s train ride from Lisbon and one of the most beautiful cities ever seen. Its shores are lined with sandy beaches and gorgeous houses.

For the perfect Cascais day trip, take an early train from Lisbon and try to get there before noon. Once you’ve arrived, take some time to walk down the streets of the Old Town and maybe buy a souvenir or two.

Then, you and your partner can spend the rest of the day at one of the hundreds of beaches that Cascais has to offer.

15. Explore the LxFactory.

If you are looking for a more adventurous date, try the LxFactory. This old industrial complex was turned into a space for art, design, dining, and entertainment. It is located under the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge and is covered in beautiful murals from contemporary artists.

Once you are done admiring the art and shopping around, you can go to one of the many restaurants or cafes. My personal favorite is the Ler Devagar bookstore, a former printing press where you can browse an extensive collection of books and visit one of the two bars while reading your new book.

And if you want something a little more adventurous, then try your hand at ax-throwing at the USAxe Club.

16. Head up to a rooftop bar with views over Lisbon.

When it comes to rooftop bars in Lisbon, there are so many to choose from. Some of the best ones are Hotel Mundial Rooftop Bar, The V Rooftop Bar, Javá Rooftop, Seen by Oliver, and Topo Chiado.

These places are paradise and offer a fantastic view over Lisbon while being able to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city below.

These bars are open day and night and offer cheap drinks with an amazing view. You can’t go wrong with choosing a rooftop bar in Lisbon because no matter what, you will get a romantic view of the city.

17. Take a waterfront walk in Parque das Nações.

Parque das Nações is located in the far north-eastern part of Lisbon and is known for being more modern. Some of the most famous locations here are the Oceanário de Lisboa, the Telecabine cable car, and the beautiful tree-lined promenade.

This promenade is 3 miles (5 kilometers) long and has great views of the Tagus River. It has hundreds of exotic trees and is the perfect place to take the dog for a walk. If you are looking for a place to take a romantic stroll along the water while soaking in the beautiful surroundings, this is the place for you.

18. Plan an enchanting evening at the Lisbon Oceanarium.

For a special night out, head to the Lisbon Oceanarium. It’s one of the biggest in Europe, with over 15,000 sea creatures from 450 species. This makes it a must-see for newlyweds looking for something unique and peaceful.

As the sun sets, the Oceanarium lights up, creating a magical setting. Walking through the quiet halls, you’ll see a massive tank in the middle, full of colorful fish, rays, and even sharks.

This calm environment is perfect for couples to enjoy each other’s company in a beautiful, serene place. The best part? The Oceanarium at Twilight feels like a different world.

It’s a chance to be close, talk softly, and watch the amazing sea life together. This visit is more than just seeing fish; it’s about sharing a memorable experience, making it a night to remember in Lisbon.

19. Visit the Estoril Garden.

Last up are the gardens at Casino Estoril. It’s the largest casino in Portugal and one of the biggest in Europe. This casino was founded in 1958 and features a large garden called the Estoril Garden. This garden is the perfect place to walk around and get to know the property before trying your luck at the casino.

Inside this casino is where Ian Fleming came up with his idea for James Bond. Additionally, it was the setting he used for the infamous Casino Royale. So, although James Bond was not filmed here, it is the place that inspired it!
