Rose Gold Wedding {Styled Shoot}

rose-gold-wedding-as-seen-on-hill-city-brie

We Virginians are so fortunate to have so many lovely wedding venues around. From downtown high rises to picturesque farms, the options are endless, and although it’s a “new” venue, Edloe Glades is full of history and beauty. With a gorgeous manor house, a lush landscape and even a pond (so great!), it’s the location that photographer Melissa Batman chose for a styled shoot. So lovely! Here are a few ideas from this rose gold wedding shoot that stand out to me:

  • The signature drink. I LOVE, love, love the idea of having a signature drink for a wedding. Isn’t it great? The “French Kiss” was the name of this creation. If you don’t want to have an open bar (expensive!), having a creatively styled drink for the evening is a perfect way to go. Don’t want alcohol? A non-alcoholic signature drink would work fine, too – or have the non-alcoholic version available for those who choose that option or for those under 21.
  • What a fun sign! Repurposing a long forgotten mirror (that was probably broken) into a chalkboard is so fun – no matter how you choose to incorporate it into your Virginia wedding.
  • Black chairs are a nice alternative to white, and the addition of mercury glass as flower vases is lovely.
  • The food looks DELICIOUS, and the cake is simple yet stunning. And, yes, there are edible sequins out there – who knew?
  • This couple is just the cutest! The “groom” is part Native American and also happens to be the photographer’s son. So fun!

Well, there’s enough inspiration here to keep you busy for a while, and if you want a rose gold wedding you will find lots of fun ideas. Enjoy!

Bed and Breakfast Wedding – Eric & Jenny

bed-and-breakfast-wedding-as-seen-on-hill-city-bride

This small, private wedding was years in the making. Although it was a second marriage for both, Eric and Jenny had played together as children due to their fathers being in the same line of work. Eric had moved away while they were still young, but he reconnected with Jenny several years later. In front of about 30 guests, they stood beneath a beautiful tree and shared “I do”s.

Be sure to take note of some of their wedding day’s details:

  • Color! From the florals to shoes and dresses, the use of color is so lovely.
  • Their respective children were the wedding attendants – I love that they incorporated their children into such special roles for their wedding day.
  • The signature tree for guests is so perfect – they had just the right amount of guests for a small, hangable keepsake

In addition, I think they did a second wedding in such a tasteful way – and having a bed and breakfast wedding (in Appomattox!) was a lovely way to go. Enjoy!

  2. What cute treat bags! These are via Style Me Pretty.

  4. Hang lovely paper hearts on string as a backdrop. So beautiful and effective to add dimension to a space. Photo by Kim Le Photography.
  5. Pink donuts? Yes, please? But I also love the fact that tiny hearts were cut out of doilies – what a great way to repurpose old or damaged crocheted pieces. Photo by Sarah K Chen Photography.

Colonial Williamsburg E-session – Chris & Melanie

colonial-williamsburg-e-session-as-seen-on-hill-city-bride

I just adore Colonial Williamsburg – I’ve only been there to enjoy the history, but imagine using it as the location for your engagement session as Chris and Melanie did with photographer Diana Gordon. Oh, and the bride has a fun backstory about her engagement. I love it!! I’m going to let her tell you her story, and after you read it, I hope you enjoy this Williamsburg e-session today!

I was not surprised when a few months before my birthday in 2014, he started the teasing process. For weeks I endured his taunting of ‘this will be the best birthday you’ve had’ and ‘I don’t know how I’ll top this one.’ In the past, whenever he said things like that, it ended up being a book or a bicycle or gear to wear while on the back of his motorcycle. Useful, but not particularly heart breaking gifts; but he was relentless in also saying that I would probably be in tears of overwhelming joy. At that point in our relationship, I wanted nothing more than for him to propose.

Since I fell in love with him at 13, he had been by my side almost every single day, and had become my best friend, adventure partner, and my rock whenever things got crazy. I knew then that I wanted to spend my life with him, but I also knew that we didn’t have enough to afford a wedding, much less an engagement ring. As a result, his non-stop teasing would put me down in the dumps because even though I was sure that I would love whatever he had planned, it still wouldn’t be the promise I really desired.

On Father’s Day [which was also Melanie’s birthday], we finally got to my house where we gave my father his recliner – that he immediately started to break in – and began to cook a big celebration feast. All my siblings were there, plus Chris’ family, and a few family friends. Through the hustle and bustle of lots of people in a tiny house, the time flew by, and before I knew it, we had finished eating and had started to cut the birthday cake. As I cleaned up what I could, I barely noticed Chris say that he had to use the restroom upstairs.

I had just sat down when I heard him call my name. I looked up and saw him standing at the base of the stairs wearing a full suit – tie and dress shoes and all – with something behind his back. My heart dropped to my stomach and started beating frantically. I froze. Chris’ mother sitting next to me had to push me to get up. I walked towards him but my hands were already shaking, and my insides were very quickly freaking out so I stopped a few feet short. He came towards me and started to say something but at that point, I had already blanked out. I can’t remember for the life of me what he said! Not one word. He could’ve been speaking pig-Latin or something and it would’ve all sounded the same to me.

He handed me a little box, which I opened to see not a ring, but a small piece of paper that read “always and forever”. I smiled and started to cry. When I looked up from the box, he was already down on one knee, with a smaller box in his hands, the prettiest ring I had ever seen inside, and from his lips came my present “Will you marry me?” Now, if this had been a movie, I would have cried, “Yes!” and we would’ve kissed, slowly fading into the credits. I’m much too awkward for movies.

Tears were quickly falling, and I attempted to cover my face with my hand while at the same time trying to say yes, though I am told nothing actually came out of my mouth. I then tried to nod, but only succeeded in looking like a circus seal. It wasn’t until my father said from somewhere behind me ‘Melanie, you have to say something’ that I partially regained consciousness enough to where a solid ‘yes’ left my lips, my hand fell to receive the ring, and once Chris stood up, I quickly collapsed in his arms and tried to hide from all the eyes on us in the room. Most of them were crying with me, so it wasn’t so bad. Chris was very spot on – it was definitely a birthday for the books.

Clifton Country Club Wedding – Jay & Mimi

clifton-country-club-wedding-as-seen-on-hill-city-bride

Ah! I just adore the soft color palette of this wedding – the peaches, cream and soft blue are just so lovely for Mimi and Jay’s country club wedding in Clifton, VA. So beautiful!

Besides the palette, here are a few other things I adore about their day:

  • The florals! The pale colors with the lamb’s ear are just stunning and sweet.
  • A country club with a golf course makes for such an absolutely gorgeous wedding backdrop as you will see.
  • Suspenders on the guys?  Yes, please! Oh, and also take note that one of the “groomsmen” was actually a “groomsmaid” with a special dress. Great idea!
  • Sprinkly cakes and a donut bar are just so fun.
  • Kitty cats!! Honored in a photo and cake topper – cats are always sure to get my attention, lol.

There are so many fun and unique details in this event today – I hope you enjoy it!

Literary Inspired Book Wedding

book-wedding-shoot-as-seen-on-hill-city-bride

There is so much to adore about this literary inspired book wedding – especially if you are an avid reader. There are so many fun details, and here are some of my favorites:

  • Heart shaped confetti was made from old books – what a perfect exit!
  • An old library index card holder was utilized for the escort cards – the patina on the box is so lovely.
  • You will notice a nod to Harry Potter on the invitations – so fun!
  • Menus were modeled after old library cards. What an adorable touch.
  • The antique books made great centerpieces – along with the added touch of a vintage typewriter.

So many fun details – I hope you enjoy this styled book wedding today! Oh, and don’t miss the cakes – it’s so darling.

Tips for Getting a Wedding Published

I get asked this question a lot, and recently I was asked to give a short talk on tips for getting a wedding published, so I decided… why not share? You can view the full presentation here, but it is lacking what I actually said in person, so here goes!

Clutch 2014 Magazine Spread

Why get published? This may seem like a “duh” question because you are here reading this, but there are some reasons you may not have thought about for being published.

  • Gain exposure for your business. Getting published opens up a whole new realm of people who will view your work.
  • Build relationships with wedding publications. If you start getting published, the source will recognize your name, and you will be more likely to get published with that source again after a positive experience.
  • Have credibility. Many sites have buttons that you can add to your site, which will show that you are a published photographer.
  • Create social media buzz. We all love social media! Getting published provides fun and interactive content for your friends and followers to share in the good news.
  • It will increase inward and outbound links. With crediting publishers will link to your website, which helps with SEO as do outbound links if you blog about getting published or add a button linking back to the publisher’s site.
  • Provides camaraderie within your local wedding vendor community. If a wedding you photograph gets published, that means that not only you get credit but the venue, florist, makeup artist… etc. all end up getting kudos. How nice!
  • It feels great to get published!

Think outside of the box! Obviously submitting weddings is very popular, but have you thought about submitting wedding related photography? Here are a few examples of things you can submit (as long as they are great!).

  • real weddings
  • styled weddings
  • rehearsal dinners
  • engagement sessions
  • bridal portraits
  • bridal showers
  • bachelor/ette parties
  • day after sessions

BUT also think about non-wedding related photography as there are many blogs and magazines out there. The possibilities are endless, but here are just a few. Actually having your work on a few different types of blogs and print media will vary the exposure you will get.

  • lifestyle
  • fashion
  • hair/makeup
  • family
  • home decor
  • diy projects
  • travel

Where do I start? The best thing to do is actually research the media outlets where you would like your work featured.

  • Check for their specific submission instructions. Ours are here, and on many sites they are easily found and will tell you about how many images, what types and in what format. Check it out before submitting!
  • Fill out their submission information fully. They tell you what to include for a reason. Be sure to abide what their wants are, and fill it all out as best as you can!
  • Find out if they are exclusive. Many media sources want exclusivity – or at least first dibs – and they will not publish anything that has been shown somewhere else. It loses the excitement when it has been seen before. If they are exclusive, a good rule of thumb is print first, then web. For my personal preference, I am exclusive with Hill City Bride blog, and I am a little more picky with submissions to clutch, the bride’s guide to have and to hold since it only comes out once a year.
  • Be familiar with the media outlet to whom you are submitting. You don’t want to submit a fru-fru wedding to an offbeat type of blog, so just be sure you know what type of look the media outlet is going for before you submit.

What makes a great submission?

  • It’s ALL in the details. Okay, maybe not all, but it’s still a high draw when there are lots of details. The bride obviously wants photos of sweet moments and fun with friends, but when it comes to blogs, they do not want to see a plethora of family portraits and late night dancing. What we do want to see are the details so that brides can get some ideas. This means the cake, favors, flowers (all of them including boutonnieres), centerpieces, seating charts, place cards, signage, pew decor, invitations, shoes, dress details, hair details, jewelry, makeup… etc. It’s a lot, but that is what is going to give the brides the ideas they are going for when they look at magazines and blogs.
  • Submit cohesive images that are the same style and similar lighting. Editing all with one style is so nice and key to a great submission. Be consistent! Also, bright day images don’t mix well with dark/yellow night images, so cultivate what you are sending.
  • Keep the photos simple and uncluttered. A media source is going to give the submission a quick glance, so be sure that what you are photographing stands out, and send uncluttered images.
  • Be unique! If you are seeing trends on Pinterest and there is a LOT of the same thing, don’t copy it when doing a styled shoot. Truly think outside of the box with this. If it’s all over the place, it’s overdone! That is one bad thing I see about all of this Pinterest and blogging… we get sick of seeing great ideas in a hurry.
  • Submit 100-150 images. Again, do what the media source says, but don’t just submit 20. It doesn’t give the source any to choose from, and chance are you can’t give a full scope in 20 or even 40 photos.
  • Describe the event in your own words. Write from the heart in the introduction. Did you connect with the bride? How was this wedding unique? What struck you as an intimate observer? Share away, but don’t write a book, either.
  • Include words from the bride about her day. We love this! Sentimental words, special moments and fond memories… include a tidbit or two about the bride and about their story as a couple.
  • Credit other vendors and include links. Yes, yes and YES. I do not want to spend time researching the vendors so that I can link to them, and I am not a big fan of just crediting the photographer. Give kudos to everyone! You wouldn’t have beautiful images to submit if many vendors didn’t work to make it a spectacular event.
  • Don’t submit too many events to one source at the same time. You have 5 amazing weddings. You give them to me all at once. I will most definitely shuffle through quickly and pick a favorite. If they are all publish worthy, maybe wait until one is published or at least accepted and then submit again.
  • Be kind and personable in your contact. Being kind and respectful goes a long way!

So, all of that to say, have fun and submit those weddings… to whomever! My last piece of advice? If you don’t get a “yes” try again and also ask why. You never know what you will learn from a “no”. Happy submitting!

PS. I also wanted to take the time to list a few “pet peeves” or problems I encounter at times, so here are a few extra pieces of advice.

  • Please try to list and credit ALL of the vendors. If a wedding or event is featured, and the blogger doesn’t have all of the information, they tend to get emails (sometimes not so nice!) from participating vendors who aren’t credited. Media outlets can only work with the information given, but it is also human to make mistakes!
  • Promote the post on social media. Just like a blog is using their platform to promote you and showcase your work, please, please, PLEASE do the same and share the love on your social media platforms. Post the blog to Facebook. PPS. What am I specifically looking for? I only take Virginia based weddings and events, unless it is a DIY project or collaboration that I am involved in. St. Simon’s Island Georgia – My Personal Story

St. Simon's Island Georgia as seen on Hill City Bride Wedding Blog

If you’re a regular reader, you may have seen my post here showcasing St. Simon’s Island, Georgia as a wonderful place to have your destination wedding and/or honeymoon. It’s gorgeous! I experienced the island while on a press trip, which had nothing to do with weddings, actually (although I did make it a point to meet with the wedding planner of The King and Prince and connect with several area wedding photographers). Our group of writers was from different areas with varied interests – some were interested in food and drink, others in fashion and local flair. I so enjoyed meeting everyone on the trip, and I’d love to tell you about it from my own personal point of view.

Before I headed to St. Simon’s Island, I was unfamiliar with our host venue of The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort, and even pulling up to the entrance doesn’t do the ocean justice – you just see an amazingly beautiful, historic building. So, imagine my glee when I actually went up to my room (my own, private room!) and went out on the deck to this view. Gorgeous! The resort is oceanfront, and there’s a nice walkway along the front to get to the beach along with lovely pools if the beach isn’t quite your thing.

After dropping off my luggage, we met in the lobby – I was greeted by our hostess, Leigh, who was with us every step of the way – super sweet, and she immediately makes you feel like her friend, which was a relief. I don’t believe that any of us knew each other before the trip, and having someone to break the ice for us was so nice. We all had a quick bite and a drink – with quite a nice spread, I might add – and headed off on Cap Fendig’s St. Simon’s Lighthouse Trolley to scope out a few of the sights. Our first stop was the historic Christ Church, which was both beautiful, full of history (including the Wesley family) and offers a beautiful graveyard (which I always find intriguing!).

Then our trolley took us to Fort Frederica, which is a national park complete with a historic fort surrounded by ruins of buildings that once were. I loved walking around the grounds and exploring on my own – I say mainly on my own because it was the first day, and we hadn’t quite gotten to know each other yet. Oh, and the drippy Georgian Spanish moss is so lovely – it’s everywhere!

We went back to the resort and had a small break before we reconvened for dinner. And what a dinner it was, but let me stop there for a minute. Remember I said that we hadn’t gotten to know each other much yet? Well, I love people and I could see a few of us starting to bond already. I went into the dining room and saw that we each had a pad of paper with our name on it, but they weren’t quite arranged the way I would have hoped, so I took the liberty to switch around the tables to make a table up of people that I had gotten to know.

Well, when I went back out from the dining room into the cocktail area, I overheard Leigh (remember our hostess?) telling one of the hotel representatives that she had organized the table arrangements strategically. OH NO! We were all walking in together, and I had to fess up. Ha! I felt awful, got in a tiny bit of trouble (and revealed the first night that I’d be the one to watch, lol), but it was all taken in good nature and became a point of chuckling later on. Whew. But let me just say I won’t be doing that ever again – and I was the one that had to leave my carefully curated table to make room for one of the hotel representatives to sit. Ha! Point taken.

Ok, moving on… our meal was at The King and Prince and was prepared by Chef James Flack. The fish were actually caught right near the resort – how amazing (and fresh!) is that?? Also, I was told that Chef James doesn’t ever smile for photos, so I was glad I captured this one! We also had deliciously fresh salads and delectable desserts. It was a wonderful introductory meal, and I LOVED meeting new friends at my table – even though it wasn’t the group I had arranged. Ha!

I was told that the sunrises were stunning – and they happen on St. Simon’s Island at 7am each day, which was a very comfortable time for me (seriously, if they had been at 5:30 I wouldn’t have gotten out of bed at all!). Each morning I was there I made it a point to head out to the sandbar and soak in the morning sunrise. It was a great way to start each day – so beautiful! St. Simon's Island as seen on Hill City Bride Wedding Blog_0008

My first sunrise on the island was followed up by an amazing breakfast at the hotel (ok, AFTER a shower, of course). They were very careful to always have healthy selections available, and their waitstaff was so sweet – and accommodating for photos. I have never had eggs benedict, but it came complete with a crabcake on top. I had fun trying new things as I’m not much of a seafood eater, either. But everything was delicious – and colorful!

After breakfast, we were once again escorted by Cap Fendig to head out to the ocean for a jaunt. The boats and water were oh so beautiful. Loved it! Plus, I am a water girl for sure, so it was right up my alley. We were able to see the fishing boats along with a lovely selection of birds on our way to the Sidney Lanier Bridge – such an interesting structure!St. Simon's Island as seen on Hill City Bride Wedding Blog_0010St. Simon's Island as seen on Hill City Bride Wedding Blog_0011St. Simon's Island as seen on Hill City Bride Wedding Blog_0012

Our time at sea was followed up by some free time – with the option to rent bikes to tour the island. So, of course, that’s what a group of us did. So fun! St. Simon’s Island is very easy to tour by bike, and the island actually has two high and two low tides each day – making the beach sand harder when the tide is out. So hard that you can bike on it. We had a great time exploring for sure. *selfie warning, lol*

That evening we enjoyed a delicious meal at Georgia Sea Grill followed by a morning breakfast at Sandcastle Cafe at the Pier – I must have been ravenously hungry because I actually don’t have any photos of our meals. But the food was so wonderfully amazing! After breakfast we learned some about he history of St. Simon’s Island, which includes “tree spirits” that are carved into some of the stately oaks on the island by artist Keith Jennings. So interesting and lovely – below is one near the visitor’s center.

We also had the opportunity to tour the gorgeous St. Simon’s Island Lighthouse, which is beautiful with an interesting history, too. The museum is so well curated along with having a knowledgeable staff to answer questions. I decided to climb to the top of the lighthouse to take a peek at the view – although it was somewhat overcast but still lovely. St. Simon's Island as seen on Hill City Bride Wedding Blog_0015St. Simon's Island as seen on Hill City Bride Wedding Blog_0016

Gnat’s Landing was our stop for lunch. Although I opted for a healthy-esque salad, I just had to test out the fried pickles. Yum! We ate indoors but it felt like the outdoors with the one side of the restaurant open to the outside and the fact that we were placed at an ultra long set of picnic tables so we could all eat together. Our evening consisted of a wine pairing dinner by ECHO that evening. I do have to say that my favorite was a honey flavored wine. So delicious – and honey is one of my favorite condiments. Only second to ketchup, but I doubt that would be an acceptable wine flavor. Ha! The images below are of my lunch at Gnat’s Landing.

The last morning, I woke up and enjoyed my last sunrise on St. Simon’s Island. Bittersweet! I happened to catch another member of our group, so we walked out there together – and chased some of the island’s birds. It was really interesting to see different flocks of birds come and go in the mornings – if you are a birdwatcher, it would be such an interesting place to go!

As I ponder my trip, I miss the beauty of St. Simon’s Island – both the inside of the resort and the outside along with the island itself. It’s so relaxed and lovely that I truly could vacation or even live there. It’s gorgeous!

I to have to be honest, though, I miss the crazy, fun loving bunch of friends I made on the trip. Even though we all have eclectic  interests, are in different phases of life and are various ages, we were all writers, which leveled the playing field and gave us commonality. I’ll forever hold St. Simon’s Island and my trip fondly in my heart – but the memories I made with the people will be the thing that I cherish most. *I miss you guys!*

Virginia Tech E-session – Doug & Alex

virginia-tech-engagement-as-seen-on-hill-city-bride

Having an engagement session at your alma mater is always a smart idea – especially with a campus as lovely as that of Virginia Tech. Both Alex and Doug attended the school, which is also where they met. Doug was on leave from the US Army, so photographer Kaytlin Lane had just a few days to squeeze in this VA Tech e-session before Doug deployed again.

Here are a few of my favorite things about this session:

  • Ok, this has nothing to do with anything but genetics, but I love Alex’s hair – both in color and style. So lovely!
  • The combination of a smartly styled, yet solid colored dress paired with a statement necklace is just so perfect and stunning.
  • Take note of the fact that they kept their more formal looking attire for the campus buildings and then dressed more casually for photos in the park (with a view).

I hope you enjoy this VA Tech e-session today and that you gain a few ideas for your own photos of just the two of you.
