The Best Guide to Having a Bacalar Honeymoon

What is Bacalar? Bacalar, Mexico, often referred to as the Maldives of Mexico, offers an ideal setting for a romantic retreat. My husband and I spent four enchanting days there, and we were captivated by its charm. The breathtaking Bacalar lagoon, outstanding hotels, delectable Mexican cuisine, and a plethora of activities make it the ultimate destination for a blissful getaway with your favorite person.

What sets Bacalar apart is its unique combination of luxury and affordability. If you’ve been wondering, “Is Bacalar expensive?” the answer is simple. Despite its luxurious ambiance, this destination remains budget-friendly, aligning with the accessibility that many other Mexican locations offer. Whether you’re on a tight budget or looking for a more extravagant experience, Bacalar caters to diverse preferences.

Although Bacalar Lagoon may give the illusion of a stunning sea, it is, in fact, a lake. The transparency of its waters and the white sandy bed contribute to a mesmerizing display of countless shades of blue, making it the perfect answer to the question of where to honeymoon in Mexico.

The Ultimate Guide to a Bacalar Honeymoon

How to Get to Bacalar, Mexico

Getting to Bacalar, Mexico is not as straightforward as reaching more popular destinations like Cancun or Cozumel. Does Bacalar have an airport? No. However, the extra effort to get there is absolutely worth it!

Unlike the touristy atmosphere of other towns such as Cozumel, Cancun, and Tulum, Bacalar exudes a more secluded and hidden paradise vibe, making it an exceptionally romantic destination for couples.

For the optimal route to Bacalar, Mexico, I recommend flying into Cancun airport, renting a car, and embarking on a scenic 4.5-hour road trip. This is exactly what my husband and I did during our journey. Plus, we also took advantage of the opportunity to make stops in Tulum and Playa del Carmen.

We rented a car for 5 days with Sixt Economy and paid just $100.65 for a Hyundai I10. Sixt offered a free airport shuttle, so we just called them when we arrived in Cancun and they came to pick us up and took us to the rental car office. Some other companies have offices directly at Cancun airport.

Other Things to Consider When Traveling to Bacalar

  • An alternative means of reaching Bacalar is by bus. The ADO bus service offers a route from Cancun to Bacalar for $30 to $35 per person. However, the journey takes approximately 5.5 hours. In my opinion, opting for the bus is not the most favorable choice unless you strongly prefer not to drive. Having a rental car makes navigation during your Bacalar honeymoon significantly more convenient. Additionally, it allows you the flexibility of traveling at your own pace without being constrained by specific schedules.
  • Important note: A new airport is currently under construction in Tulum, anticipated to open very soon. Once operational, flying into Tulum and enjoying a mere 2.5-hour drive to Bacalar will provide a convenient alternative. Tulum also offers a great option for extending your romantic getaway, with its own attractions and bohemian charm to explore over a couple of days.

Although getting on your romantic trip to Bacalar may not be easy, it’s well worth it.

Where to Stay in Bacalar Mexico

There is no shortage of gorgeous places to stay in Bacalar. Many of the hotels are great for couples, and there is even a hotel that offers a few overwater bungalows.

Our Habits Bacalar

Our Habits Bacalar sits directly on the lagoon. Immerse yourself in the luxury of A-frame bungalows, offering either jungle or lagoon vistas. Perfect for a romantic getaway, this secluded retreat boasts three picturesque wedding venues accommodating up to 80 guests (more on that later).

It’s also an ideal haven for honeymooners. Indulge in culinary delights at the exquisite ‘Siete’ restaurant and partake in activities like stand-up paddleboarding and clear kayaking. Prices start as low as $272/night.

Our Habits Bacalar also offers a captivating four-night package. Newlyweds can immerse themselves in a transformative experience guided by the forces of nature. As a result, explore the realms of connectivity, creativity, and heightened awareness. This exclusive package includes accommodation, daily breakfast, meditation, yoga, stand-up paddleboarding, couples’ water meditation, a 4-hour lagoon cruise, and more.

Hotel CasaBakal

We stayed at Hotel CasaBakal for 3 nights and had an amazing experience. We truly felt as though we could have stayed for 2 months. This hotel is perched right on the Bacalar Lagoon and offers incredible views, bungalow-style rooms, mouth-watering food, and a plethora of activities.

We stayed in the Bungalow with a lagoon view room, and I can’t recommend that room enough. There are even views of the lagoon from the bed. Casa Bakal offers a wonderful couple’s massage experience. Nightly rates start from just $197/night.

Hotel Akalki

As the only hotel in Bacalar providing the distinctive experience of overwater bungalows, Hotel Akalki stands as a unique choice for couples seeking something out of the ordinary. Beyond its accommodation offerings, the hotel functions as a holistic center. It has a profound commitment to healing, featuring a variety of programs and retreats.

While the overwater bungalows may not match the lavishness of those in the Maldives or French Polynesia, they offer a one-of-a-kind experience at a fraction of the cost. Pricing for the overwater bungalows begins at $540 per night.

Where to Eat in Bacalar Mexico

The most exceptional dining experience we had in Bacalar was at Maiz Azul, situated within Hotel CasaBakal. The ambiance is nothing short of enchanting, transporting you to a magical jungle setting.

This outdoor restaurant exudes a highly romantic atmosphere with its subdued lighting, delightful cocktails, and an array of extraordinary traditional Mexican dishes. My husband and I lost track of time, spending a leisurely two hours immersed in the allure of the surroundings. We savored both the delectable cuisine and the delicious drinks.

When is the best time to visit Bacalar?

The best time to visit Bacalar, Mexico, is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. We visited the last week of April and had perfect weather.

During these months, you can expect pleasant weather with lower chances of rainfall. The temperatures are comfortable, ranging from 70-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Visiting during this period is ideal, so you can enjoy the beauty of Bacalar’s lagoon and surrounding areas without the interruption of heavy rain.

For those seeking a quieter experience and are comfortable with warmer temperatures, the shoulder seasons of May to June and September to October are also good times to visit. It’s important to note, however, that there may be occasional rainfall during these months.

Is Bacalar good for a honeymoon?

A Bacalar Mexico honeymoon stands out as an exceptional choice, particularly for couples looking for an affordable tropical paradise. While alternative destinations such as Thailand or Indonesia may be affordable, the expenses associated with flights can escalate the cost significantly.

One of the key advantages of honeymooning in Bacalar is its accessibility. Numerous cities in the United States offer direct flights to Cancun, making the journey to Bacalar not only more budget-friendly but also convenient. This accessibility factor adds an extra layer of appeal for couples seeking an escape to a stunning tropical paradise.

Additionally, Bacalar is an excellent choice for a wedding or elopement! The town is known for its stunning natural beauty, particularly the mesmerizing Bacalar Lagoon, often referred to as the “Lake of Seven Colors” due to its various shades of blue and green.

The tranquil atmosphere, romantic sunsets, and cultural richness of Mexico make Bacalar a captivating destination. Newlyweds seeking a unique and memorable wedding experience will thrive in this part of Mexico. The affordability of Bacalar compared to some other popular wedding destinations, along with its ease of access from major cities, adds to its appeal.

The variety of venues, from boutique hotels to lakeside locations, allows couples to seek the perfect setting for their special day. Bacalar offers a harmonious blend of natural charm, cultural richness, and logistical convenience, making it a compelling choice for weddings and elopements.

Other Things to Note About a Bacalar Honeymoon

WiFi isn’t very strong in all areas.

If you and your partner are considering a tech-free retreat for your romantic getaway, Bacalar is an ideal choice. Unfortunately, the Wi-Fi signal is not particularly strong. It suffices for basic tasks like searching on Google or scrolling through Facebook. However, it is not strong enough for clear video calls or video streaming in most locations.

Phone data may have a hefty cost.

Many people have the choice to pay an additional fee and utilize their USA SIM card in Mexico. In case your mobile service provider doesn’t provide this option, you’re from a different country, or if you’re looking to save some money, you can get a Mexican SIM card near the Cancun airport or utilize the Airalo app.

This app offers an eSim, proving to be extremely convenient and cost-effective. We chose this option during our time in Mexico and encountered no problems whatsoever. It was excellent for navigation, sending text messages, and even uploading Instagram stories.

Lagoon Bacalar Mexico

A Bacalar Mexico honeymoon includes white, sandy beaches and crystal clear water.

Bugs can be prevalent on your Bacalar honeymoon.

Given that a significant portion of your time in Bacalar will be spent near the lagoon, it’s crucial to pack and regularly use insect repellent. During our visit, we anticipated encountering numerous mosquitoes, but surprisingly, their presence was minimal.

However, we recognize that we were the exception, as several of our friends told us that they encountered quite a few mosquitoes in Bacalar. Considering the slight risk of Dengue fever, I recommend applying mosquito repellent often, even if you don’t see mosquitos. Always better to be safe than sorry, and you don’t want your Bacalar Mexico honeymoon to get ruined with bites.

ATMs aren’t always readily available.

Bacalar has a limited number of ATMs, with a couple located in a plaza on the western side of the town square. It’s important to remember that these ATMs may occasionally run out of cash due to high demand.

To avoid any inconvenience, I recommend withdrawing cash in Cancun or Tulum before heading to Bacalar. While credit cards are increasingly accepted, having cash on hand might be necessary for certain tours.

Do you and your partner need a money-saving tip? Never let the ATM do your currency conversion. Always choose to be charged in the local currency. This will save you money when visiting any country, outside of your home country.

Gas stations are few and far between.

There are not many gas stations on the drive from Tulum to Bacalar. Ensure that you or your significant other fills up the tank in Tulum before setting off on your road trip.
