When it comes to venue styles, one that remains popular is the farm. With beautiful landscapes and a casual atmosphere, it’s no wonder! If there is a usable structure – such as an updated barn – these locations are really popular. Aaron and Taylor chose such a venue for their own Virginia barn wedding, and the results are stunning.
Tips for Having a Virginia Barn Wedding
Barn weddings have become popular in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. The rustic charm and inviting atmosphere create the perfect backdrop. If you’ve always dreamed about getting married in a barn like this couple, here are a few tips.
Pick the right venue.
The first step is finding the perfect barn that fits your big day’s vision. Look for venues that offer the ambiance you want—whether it’s an old-world rustic barn or a more modern facility with updated amenities.
Also, ask questions about the venue, such as:
- Can the space comfortably accommodate my guest list?
- Are there restrooms, a kitchen, and staged areas for ceremonies and receptions?
- Is it accessible for all guests, including those with mobility challenges?
Set a budget.
Like any wedding, setting a budget is crucial. In addition to the venue rental, don’t forget to factor in catering, furniture and tableware rentals, lighting, and decor. Use the venue’s complimentary items if available.
Embrace rusticness.
The rustic charm of a barn means you can include natural elements in your decor. Items like wildflowers, wood slices, vintage books, and fairy lights can add to the ambience.
Plan for the weather.
One of the joys of having a barn wedding is the ability to utilize both indoor and outdoor spaces. However, it’s essential to have a rain plan in case of unforeseen weather conditions. Of course, an outdoor wedding requires a rain plan, but also be prepped to keep guests warm or cool in a draft-filled barn space.
Opt for casual catering.
Barn weddings are ripe for farm-to-table catering, so chat with your caterer about your options. You could also have a casual buffet or various food trucks to satiate the appetite of your guests.
Make the reception fun.
Whether you have a typical dance floor or not, get ready to turn up the music and have a great time inside the barn. Outside, designate specific areas for lounging and games like large-scale Jenga.

- As you will see, this location is absolutely stunning! The barn itself is clean and beautiful inside, and the farmland itself is oh so perfect for photos. What a gorgeous spot for a wedding!!
- The colors that Taylor chose are so soft and beautiful. The teal and pink tones blend perfectly together.
- I love, love, love the use of succulents! From the groom’s boutonniere down to the high-impact (yet inexpensive!) table centerpieces, these hydrated cuties add just the right touch of whimsy. So pretty!!
- A flower girl with a flower crown? Yes, please! She is such a little darling at the wedding.
- I’m particularly drawn to the light suits that the groom and his groomsmen are wearing. I feel that it’s the perfect color for a Virginia barn wedding. So great!
- Having a cake and cupcakes is just easy – no cutting and serving required. I’ll always be a fan of pre-portioned desserts. Yum!
Taylor shared her love story about her Virginia barn wedding in her own words.
Aaron and I knew pretty shortly after meeting each other that this was something special – that it was different than any relationship we had had before. We were instantly just completely comfortable around each other. Instantly best friends. We knew this was forever. Aaron proposed in the sweetest way. Because I inherited my grandmother’s ring and needed it sized, it wasn’t exactly a surprise that we were getting engaged. But when Aaron took me to the place of our first date, when he got down on one knee right in the parking lot and asked me to be his wife, it still left me breathless. Our wedding day was the perfect representation of us – it was all about family, tradition, and the meaning of love. We couldn’t have asked for more.
