Why make DIY body balm?
My skin needs a little extra moisture here and there all year round. However, if you have a new engagement ring to show off, you may want to take extra care of your hands.
This natural DIY body balm will make your hands (and lips and feet) happy. It’s so easy and extra nourishing.
DIY Body Balm Ingredients
- Beeswax (available here)
- Coconut Oil (available here)
- Cocoa Butter Tablets (available here)
- Any essential oil either for scent or medicinal purposes (I chose tea tree oil because it’s so healing)
A note before starting…
The ratio that I use for this is 1 part beeswax and 1 part cocoa butter tablets to 2 parts coconut oil, but this is approximate. The essential oil is just a few drops.
Note that cocoa butter and beeswax are fairly hard, so you will want more coconut oil to make a consistency that will melt with body heat.
You will also need the following to make our all-natural balm:
- Glass pouring dishes for melting (2)
- Grater
- Microwave
- Containers for placing your balm (find a plethora of types here)
Instructions for Making DIY Body Lotion
First, you will need to grate the cocoa butter and beeswax. The cocoa butter does grate a tad bit easier than the beeswax.
I use the microwave to melt everything. It’s best to use a glass container with a pour spout.
I also melt the beeswax and cocoa butter separately and first. They take a bit longer to melt (I do 30-second increments and stir in between each) than the coconut oil.
Therefore, I melt the coconut oil afterward in a separate container.
Once everything is melted, stir everything together. You will then have a container filled with melted beeswax, cocoa butter, and coconut oil.
Then, it’s time to add your few drops of essential oil to the melted mixture.
Be sure that your containers are ready. And then pour the mixture into each one—be careful not to overfill!
Then voila! You have your own moisturizing body balm that you made yourself! It is important to note that it will have a hardened consistency that will melt with body heat.
Here are my favorite places to use this natural lotion:
- Lips
- Hands
- Elbows
- Heels
- Face (yes, my face!)
How to Make a Body Balm Scrub
Also, as a sidebar, this can also act as a sugar scrub. How? Just use a half teaspoon or so of the balm and add a half teaspoon of sugar.
It is perfect for your hands and even your heels. When you are finished, just wash away the sugar, and the oils stay behind to hydrate your skin. I love this stuff!
