5 Tips on How to Step Up Your Relationship
Talk about your hopes and dreams.
It’s important to have the big talks such as “do you want kids?” and “what are your opinions on marriage?” You also need to discuss your hopes and dreams for the future.
Talk about what you want to do with your career, living situation, and how to handle finances. Before you get engaged, you need to discuss these with your significant other.
You’ll be a stronger couple for it. Make sure you’re also taking the time to hear what they have to say on these topics too. Listening is one of those unavoidable—yet extremely important—relationship rules for couples.
If you want to know how to take your relationship to the next level, have a few key discussions.
Carve out time for your partner.
Want to know how to move your relationship forward? Making time for your spouse isn’t just about date nights.
It’s about lending an ear when they need to vent. Possibly, it includes helping them out around the house with chores. It could even be just helping them enjoy a breather from work with a nice movie night at home.
When you put your relationship as a priority in your life, you and your partner will become closer and stronger as a couple. If you want to know how to step up your relationship, quality time is a must.
Spending time together is a fabulous way to strengthen the ties of your relationship.
Schedule a regular date night.
Dating, especially during a pandemic, can be challenging. With many places closed down recently, when was the last time you had a real date with your significant other?
Schedule a date night at home or—if you’re able—have a date out. Consequently, it’s important to make sure that date nights don’t fall by the wayside. Schedule a weekly date night each week to reconnect with your partner.
P.S. We have ideas here and here!
Regular date nights are essential in a committed relationship.
Give your partner’s interests a try.
Grab a controller and give Call of Duty a try or book doing a virtual paint and sip together. No matter what the activity is, it’s important to give your partner’s interests a try.
Maybe this is something you do once and never again. Consequently, it still shows that you’re taking an interest in something important to them. If you find that you enjoy that activity, you may have just found something fun you can now enjoy together!
Test out your partner’s interests. You just may find a new hobby!
Discuss intimate topics.
You and your sweetheart need to get on the same page about intimate topics. What is okay and isn’t okay before you are married?
Know and understand each other’s boundaries so that way you can enjoy those intimate moments a little more. Even if all you’re doing is making out.
Don’t be afraid to talk with your partner about things they enjoy, such as pet names, neck kissing, etc. The only one missing out by avoiding these conversations is you!
Talk about what you’re comfortable with physically so that you can be on the same page.

Neely MoldovanSuch an important post. We really need to be better about getting off our phones and spending good time together.
Malia ReedThis is such a great post! My boyfriend and I are planning on getting engaged this year (we’re both juniors in college), and I can 100% attest to the importance of discussing the serious questions (kids, finances, values, love languages, expectations, childhood, family dynamics, etc.) before engagement. Most of these things we would have talked about in premarital counseling (after engagement) through our church, but if you know the answers to these things before the proposal, it just makes you that much more confident and excited about going into marriage! Thank you so much for the other tips!
StephanieGiving their interests a try is so important! Before meeting my husband, I had no interest in spicy food or sports and now I eat my buffalo wings as hot as possible while cheering on my favorite basketball teams haha! It’s hilarious how just giving their interests a try can change your mindset!
JenniferI never thought about it like that, but it is kind of funny. Those things we said we’d never do or thought we wouldn’t like can bring us joy once we try them. Interesting!
JenniferAw! I love that you are going through this process at the moment. There’s a lot of advice on here about relationships (and long-distance ones, too!) that can help. I can’t wait for you to get engaged. So exciting!!!
VenusThese are some very good tips. Their not too over the top, but just right. I definitely see a use for them.
